Hampshire President dies after a long illness
It is with the greatest sadness that we have to report the death of our very popular President Trevor Shanks. He has suffered from various illness and accidents over the greater part of his 5 year presidency, but has always come back cheerful and determined to do his job. But not this time. He died in Basingstoke on 1 August 2017.
His wife and family have created this obituary:
"Samuel Trevor Shanks was born in Belfast on 29th September 1930. He was educated at the Belfast Boys Model School. He then attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution 1943-1950 and remained a proud member of the Old Instonians Association all his life, attending annual dinners in Belfast and London for a number of years.
He worked in Mackie’s foundry testing a new loom until 1959 when he joined BOCM Silcock on the York Road, Belfast. Trevor worked there until 1982, when he moved to Basingstoke Head Office. He worked there until he retired in the late 80s.
Trevor met Jean McCafferty whilst working at Mackie’s Foundry. Jean was the cousin of Trevor’s friend Sam McCausland and she had no interest in him, or so she says, until 1956 when they decided that they liked each other enough to start dating. Trevor and Jean married on 8th July 1959. They had two daughters, Helen (1964) and Carole (1967). Starting in 1994 Helen and Carole made him the proudest of grandas with the arrival of six grandsons, currently ranging from 13 to 22 years old.
Trevor was always a keen sportsman, playing squash, badminton, tennis and table tennis. He was a good club level player and began playing tennis at Cliftonville Tennis Club in Belfast, where he won the club singles tournament every year from 1952 to 1971. He then moved to CIYMS. Upon moving to Basingstoke he played for Oakley Tennis Club and became a Vice-President of the club. He played for Oakley until his first hip replacement in 1998 at the age of 67. He continued beating his grandchildren at any sport well into his 70s…
He played badminton for Eglinton and Malone Presbyterian until his move to Basingstoke where he played for BOCM and Sun Life Clubs. He was secretary of Basingstoke Badminton League from 1986 – 2008. He also received the Basingstoke Sports award for services to sport in 1996 and 2003 and was runner up in 1997. Trevor was manager of the Hampshire Badminton first team for many years and served as President of Hampshire Badminton Association from 2010 until his recent passing. Even whilst in hospital he was re-elected in June 2017 for the final time.
During the 70s & 80s Trevor also organised the Ulster and Irish open tournaments in Badminton and Tennis. He was pleased to be asked to return to Belfast in 1987 to referee the Helvetia Cup.
Trevor was treasurer of Oakley Community Care Group from 2008, as well as being a coordinator with Jean from 2002 until his passing. He was Treasurer of the Basingstoke branch of Cancer Research for 21 years. In recognition of his voluntary service to older people, he was awarded a Hampshire Good Neighbour Award in 2012.
He is survived by his two daughters, Helen and Carole, his six grandsons, Matthew, Adam, Finn, Aidan, Cian and Rian and most importantly his wife Jean. Jean has looked after Trevor through his various ailments and illnesses and has been a strong, yet often talkative, rock throughout his long life. Trevor’s love for Jaffa Cakes and biscuits was second only to his love for Jean.
Trevor will be remembered as someone who always had a positive outlook on life & a great sense of humour. During the legendary Cliftonville Tennis Club teas in the 50s & 60s, he is still remembered fondly for going round to collect the tea money from everyone at the table telling jokes as he went. At any Badminton match, Trevor could never sit down and relax and always paced around with the tension of the match while Jean watched him like a hawk, keeping him out of trouble.
He will be fondly remembered by his family, friends and the wealth of people he has met throughout his life." And so say all of us,
Trevor's funeral will take place on Friday 11th August at 0930 at Basingstoke Crematorium, Manor Farm, Stockbridge Rd, North Waltham RG25 2BA & afterwards at Dummer Golf Club, Down St, Basingstoke RG25 2AD.
Please wear bright clothing if possible.
Family flowers only but donations may be sent in his memory to St Michael's Hospice, c/o Spencer & Peyton, 380 Worting Road, Basingstoke RG22 5DZ.
Please would you let firstname.lastname@example.org know if you will be joining us at Dummer Golf Club.

New Hampshire Badminton Secretary
Hazel Marks has been Secretary for Hampshire Badminton for the last 19 years. She has decided, with some misgivings, that the time has come to retire and leave the way clear for someone with younger and fresher ideas to take over. That someone is Paul Jackson, a member of Notorious BC and father of Alex, one of our most promising junior players. Paul can be reached on email@example.com or on 07454 440046.
Hampshire Senior Restricted Tournament

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you of the death of Kieran Dix, following a catastrophic accident. Kieran, brother of Jo, was a member of St. Denys Badminton Club and a sometime Officer of Hampshire Badminton Association. On behalf of the Association I would like to say that we are thinking of Jo and of their family and friends at this very sad time.

Hampshire Senior Gold Tournament 2015
This event took place at the Westgate Badminton Centre on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November. There was a good entry in the Men's Singles, but a rather disappointing turnout for the other events.
Congratulations to Sarah Burgess and Kelly Holdway on winning the Women's Doubles. The final ended prematurely due to an injury to Laura Baker who, with partner Laura Woodward, had put up a good fight. The score was 21-13 18-10. Ross Green did well to reach the final of the Men's Singles where he met the top seed Joel Douse of Buckinghamshire and pushed him to three games resulting in a score of 20-22 21-9 21-11. In the Men's Doubles, Max Flynn, with partner David Jones of Berkshire, started from an unseeded position and reached the final without dropping a set. There they beat top seeds Jonathan McDonald (Wiltshire) and Andrew Wainwright (Warwickshire) in three sets 17-21 24-22 21-18. Well done to them too. In the Mixed Doubles, Adam Rickenbach and Laura Woodward, in her second final of the day, justified their 2nd seed status by reaching the final but found Zach Russ and Wun Yang Huang of Sussex too strong for them at the end of a very busy weekend and went down to a 21-15 21-16 defeat. All the Hampshire players played really well.

Hampshire Senior Silver Singles Tournament 2015
This event took place at the Westgate Badminton Centre on Saturday 22 August. There were 43 Men entrants but only 11 Ladies. Hampshire was represented in the Men's by Jonathan Avery, Matt Showan, Tom Frisby, Craig Muir and Ben Muir. Matt went into the Consolation (Plate) event and was given byes through to the semi-final where he lost to the eventual runner-up, Andrezej Gasz 21-11 21-12. Jonathan and Tom also lost their first matches, but chose not to play in the Consolation event. Craig and Ben, having both won their first round matches in straight sets, were drawn against each other in the next round. Big brother Ben won the match 21-5 21-12 and went on to reach his appointed place as 2nd Seed in the final. There he met Joel Douse and, after losing the first set 21-13, was fighting back, when he wrenched his ankle badly and was forced to conceded the match. A disappointing end for Ben - we wish him a speedy recovery.
Hampshire was represented by Jo Dix and Anna Showan in the Ladies'. Both won their first round matches, Anna by beating Sarah Preece from Devon by 25-23 21-10, and Jo by outclassing Sarah's sister Hannah Preece by 21-19 21-5. Anna then met 2nd Seed Paige Butler and went down in a hard fought match by 21-15 19-21 21-13 while Jo, who was Seeded at 1, unexpectedly lost to young Lucy Dong by 21-18 21-17 in the semi-final.
