The 2nd Open Singles Tournament, sponsored by HEAD, took place at the Westgate Badminton Centre on Saturday 8th August. There was a good entry, considering that this was holiday time and times are hard. Thirty men and 23 ladies entered, from as far afield as Yorkshire, Devon, Essex, Nottinghamshire and Kent.
Jo Dix came closest to winning a title, but was pipped at the post by Yorkshire teenager Sarah Milne. Anna Showan played really well, beating seeded Gemma Whiting (Kent)in the quarter-final, but going down to Sarah in the semi-final.
In the Men's event Ben Tier, Mark Cappleman and Martin Ventham all went out at the quarter-final stage.
First round losers were given a second chance in the plate events. Sarah Burgess and Helena Cable made it through to one semi-final, where Helena took the honours and proceeded to the final where she was beaten in straight sets by Munn-Tzin Bong of Buckinghamshire.
Mark Newbery, who had put up a good fight in his first round match in the main event, went all the way to the final of the plate event and won it convincingly.
