The Westgate Badminton Centre
Winchester is leading the way in badminton facilities in England following the opening of the £2+ million Westgate Centre.
The first Performance and Development Centre in the country is now open after six years of hard work from several Hampshire Badminton Association stalwarts, in partnership with Westgate School and Hampshire County Council, and with funding from Sport England.
Westgate Badminton Centre is the new home of the HBA, which the top badminton county will use to train not only its top players of today but also the world class players of tomorrow in the Lottery-funded players of the World Class Start Programme.
The Centre has five international standard courts and, as well as the sessions for all the county groups from junior to veterans, it will be open for all members of the public to come and try out badminton for the first time.
Westgate School is able to make use of the facilities during daytime hours.
Centre manager, Nigel Tier, an ex-international and World Grand Prix winner said: "This is a real boost having top class facilities in the heart of the county and in an area where sport in general is on the up.
"Players of all standards can come and enjoy this new £2.2 million facility, regardless of age and ability."
The Centre was happy to have recruited as Assistant Manager Paul Whetnall, one of the country's top coaches and former international player and team manager. Sadly he has now decided to return to Kent and we are urgently seeking someone to tackle the difficult job of trying to fill his shoes!
